WinWin4WorkLife researchers contribute to the public debate on return-to-office mandates in Finland

On 18 April 2025, Riku Reunamäki and Olle Järv from the Digital Geography Lab at the University of Helsinki published an opinion piece in Helsingin Sanomat, Finland’s leading newspaper. The article discusses the growing debate around return-to-office mandates and highlights that research evidence does not support blanket obligations for employees to work from the office several days a week.

The authors argue that decisions on remote and hybrid work should be based on evidence rather than assumptions about productivity, innovation or corporate culture. They also stress that remote work has broader implications for work-life balance, well-being, urban development, regional inequality and multilocal living.

This contribution reflects the core ambition of the WinWin4WorkLife project: to support evidence-based policies and practices for healthy, inclusive and sustainable remote working arrangements across Europe.
